Aegviidu is a small town by the railway on the edge of the Kõrvemaa forests, known as the starting point for hiking trails. For its size it has a great many streets — close to sixty — and the buildings mix permanent homes, summer houses and guest accommodation. Seasonal use means some houses stand empty through winter, and in spring the commonest trouble is a seized lock or a door swollen with damp.
